THE DAY THE LEAVES SANG

The day the leaves sang

fall was still summer warm

with sunbeams kissing cheeks.

 The day the leaves sang

we sat under the tree

drinking ruby Banyuls.

The day the leaves sang

a waiter twisted, turned,

dropping a tray of beer.

The day the leaves sang

a man tapped the table

discussing his divorce.

The day the leaves sang

only you looked up to see

feathers and tiny beaks.
