Nov 13 A Fable

The Nov. 13 Flash Fiction prompt was to write a fable. This was the hardest for me so far. I decided to base it on a true story.

 The Dog and Kitten

Olga stretched out in the winter sun. The snow has melted. She looked back at the house. Her owners were inside if she wanted to go in, but it was nice to be out in the snow. She was meant to be in the mountains ready to rescue climbers like her ancestors, but she could be happy here in New Hampshire too.

As she closed her eyes to nap, she heard a noise. Opening them, a kitten walked by, a very small kitten, not much bigger than one of her paws.

“Hello,” the kitten said. “How can you stand the cold?”

“I love it,” Olga said. She debated chasing the kitten out of the yard.

“Do you ever go inside?”

“Every night.” Olga sometimes found the house too warm. Cats were PITAs, Pains in the Ass. Their last one died of old age and was not missed by Olga.

“You are so lucky, I wish I could stay inside. My name’s Fiend.” The kitten snuggled next to Olga and began to purr. “Do you think you could get me inside?”

“We don’t need a kitten.” That was God’s truth.

“We could make a deal,” the kitten said.”

“Deal?”

“I can get you extra food?”

Olga thought about it. She was always hungry even if her family was generous. Oh why not the hell try it. “Get in,” she said. Fiend climbed into the dogs mouth despite how wet and slippery it felt. She tried not to scratch while Olga barked at the door.

“What do you want?” the lady of the house asked when she opened the door.

Olga strolled in, sat down and opened her mouth. Fiend strutted out, despite being saliva wet with a TA! TA! air about her.

The woman scooped her up and the dog and kitten heard the discussions about keeping the kitten between the woman, her husband and the two kids. The husband lost and Fiend became a part of the household.

She developed a way to sneak into the fridge when it was open and to steal pieces of meat that she always shared with Olga.

Moral of the story? Team work gains more than fighting.
