The fat lady hasn't sung. On the abortion issue, she never will, I suspect.
Kansas is a breath of hope for pro-choice people. The operative word is choice.
After writing Coat Hangers and Knitting Needles about abortion before Roe v. Wade, I sent the book to pro-life legislators and organizations. Most were men.
I also found in the process many woman said, they didn't like the idea of abortion, but felt they had no right to make the decision for someone else.
So many women I know who did have abortions thought they never would until faced with the situation.
There's the mother with a stretched budget who already had three children. Her birth control failed.
The woman who learned that the fetus is defective.
The student who is fighting her way through university and watches every penny just to eat and buy her books.
The teenager who was impregnated by her brother.
The woman who was raped.
And even the woman who didn't like children all that much and knew she doesn't have the emotional capacity nor the finances to raise a child.
I could write a list that lasted for miles.
Ï read the Kansas vote was 76%. I've read polls that say 76% of respondents support the right to choose.
Republicans have made a grave mistake on this issue. There are too many women who want control over their own bodies. Hopefully they will keep voting to save the right for themselves and others.
