Free Write - Wet Rabbit

This photo was taken near D-L's house after a rain. Someone must have put the rabbit on the metal bar. The next day it had disappeared. Hopefully it had been returned to the owner.

"I want Funny Bunny NOW! Three-year old Allie stamped her foot.

Susan, Allie's Mom, was struggling to get her daughter's soaked clothes off.  She would have to wait to change from her own soaked sweater and Jeans.

They had been caught in a downpour on their walk. It was still pelting against the living room window.

Allie ran to her push chair. "Funny Bunny, Funny Bunny, Funny Bunny, Funny Bunny," she called. He has run away."

Susan, still sopping wet, looked under the push  chair's blanket and glanced out the door to the sidewalk leading to the house.

No Funny Bunny.

James, Allie's Daddy, came in. He, too, was soaking wet from the walk from the bus to the house. "Guess what I found?" He held out one very wet stuffed bunny.

Allie grabbed the rabbit, wetting the once dry shirt her mother had just put n her.

It had been a long hot summer and today was no different.

My masters tried their best to keep me in the shade, well-watered and cuddled.

But I have a mind of my own and love to explore every field, sniff every bush and tree, leave my mark as far and wide as I can. They call it ‘marking my territory’, I call it leaving my calling card. Hope springs eternal that somewhere, sometime, some female (ok in my world we call them bitches, no disrespect is meant at all, it is simply the appropriate label for a female of my species).

As it had been and still was way too hot, my master’s had decided to head for higher altitudes. Unknown territory had me leery, and wouldn’t you know it, my favorite stuffed animal (my likeness as well, do I have influence or what?) slipped out of their hands and into a nearby lake!

I did, at great effort, manage to fish him out. After all, I’m not called Sherlock for nothing!

Herr Hare was somewhat lost.

And wet.

The rain had been torrential, and even sheltering in the doorway of a random house did not prevent his fur from getting thoroughly soaked.

He was cold.

And hungry.

But he was on a mission.

He needed to find Melinda.

No, not the black and white cat.

The little girl to whom he belonged.

He had fallen out of her stroller during a walk around the village, and Melinda’s mother had not noticed.

Melina must be heartbroken.

Certainly Herr Hare was.

He had managed to search several streets, looking for the lavender door where they all lived. And the fragrant grape vines that grew up the side of the house.

After the rain, resuming his search, he encountered a small dog, who grabbed Herr Hare in his teeth and shook him vigorously. He didn’t lose any stuffing, fortunately, and actually the shaking helped dry him off.

After the dog got bored, Herr Hare decided to climb higher in order to see farther. He shinnied up a metal road barrier.

Looked right.

Looked left.

And then he saw it! The lavender door.

And coming out the door . . .
