Free Writer - Dreamcatcher

Because I've been sick instead of going to a café for a Free Write we did it at home and directly on our laptops. We have a new writer, our dog Sherlock. who kept hitting Rick's laptop keys.

Rick's Free Write

It was never really in my dreams to live in Europe. Maybe a couple years in England or Ireland, even Australia, where I could handle the language. One of those executive development assignments. Play some golf, see a few iconic sights. But certainly not for the rest of my life.

But dreams have a way of evolving.

The dream that caught me was my soulmate. I had met her professionally in the late 70s, then lost track when she followed her dream to Europe in the late 80s. We’d had no contact (no email, no internet then) until a dozen or so years ago when I learned she was now living in Geneva, Switzerland.

I happened to visit Geneva each year for a conference, so I invited her to meet me for coffee. Instead, she took me to Café du Soleil, the oldest restaurant in the city. We spent a couple hours trying to catch up on each other’s lives over the past 20 years.

Later that year, I visited her at her other home in the south of France. Flying back to the States, I decided I needed to move closer to her. Visiting a time or two each year would never be sufficient.

Tried to get my company to transfer me to the UK; it almost happened. But they dragged their feet. So I took the earliest possible retirement, and moved my whole life.

The dreamcatcher you see is in what we call the “snore room,” where I go when I ronfle, or if my back is hurting (the mattress is firmer).

The dreams I never had have all come true.

The sign in the hotel lobby told those attending the Dream Catcher's conference to go to the conference room on the second floor. A flutter of feathers and metal followed the Dream Catchers. They were all assigned numbers.

The oldest Dream Catcher found, over 100 years old was the keynoter. He told of their history starting with the Indians and how it had spread to the population. He pointed out that the only ones there were real Dream Catchers, not those commercially made.

He emphasized the important of their work.

At coffee break time, the Dream Catchers had a chance to chat.

DC232, Omaha Nebraska "I work with ten year old twins. Sometimes they dream at the same time. I let the good ones through. One of the girls is being bullied and I stop those dreams so she can be strong enough to fight back.

DC511 Boston, MA. My problem is Harry hates his job. I try and keep his nightmare dreams away from him but they come to fast.

And so it went as the Dream Catchers went through the day attending work shops on empathy. Technology was one that the DCs rejected. We need to work with the old magic they agreed. But they did let technology dreams that might help through if they thought it would help.

The conference concluded with a workshop explaining how to repair feathers.

Julia's Free Write

There it was…hanging from a hook over the curtain.

When she had walked into the room, first she greeted the owners,

People that she hadn’t really met before, but it was a small village, and any newcomer was quickly appropriated by the locals, especially if they seemed to come from somewhere exotic. After all this was a village used to tourists, but not so many “foreigners,” read anyone not born within a 5-mile range, came, and certainly not to live.

As her hosts sat her down, and went, one to brew the coffee (hopefully it would be strong enough for her rather picky tastes), the other to answer the doorbell to more guests,

She noticed the interesting feathers-on-a-ring decoration hanging from the curtain.

Here she was in a small village in Northern Finland: how in the world had an Alaskan dreamcatcher arrived here? Should she be worried? Perhaps they had taken it from a dead sailor, and the dreams would be nightmares.

Whatever, she would try and get to know them better and hope that the dreamcatcher only led to pleasant dreams!

 Sherlock's Free Write

Sherlock was on the bed next to Rick who was using his laptop to type his Free Write.

Sherlock insisted on typing too. His Flash Fiction was indeed short, "2." Maybe he was thinking it was the word for all in French.  He may have had more to say before Rick told him to "Get down."
