I'm a reading addict, and this is one book, I couldn't put down.
o read Maraglindi by Dr. Bob Rich is to be transported back in time to the Australia of the mid- 1800s.
Maraglindi is very unusual child that goes beyond her half caste status as an aboriginal, the product of a rape by a white man. Her ability to care and love becomes a transitional force for many of the lives she touches,
A white family sees that she is something special and uses their influence to send her to a private girls school. Forced to take the name Mary Fisher, she is ostracized as an “abo slut” and other names. Yet she finds way to overcome the abuse.
The book captures the period and calls attention of the cruelty of racism and colonialism of occupiers.
The clash of cultures is not peculiar to that time place, sadly, but something that has been seen over throughout history. However, this book takes it from the general to the personal through the development of both aboriginals and occupiers.
Dr. Rich describes himself as “I am a professional grandfather. My main motivation is to transform society to create a sustainable world in which my grandchildren and their grandchildren in perpetuity can have a life, and a life worth living. This means reversing environmental idiocy that now threatens us with extinction, and replacing a culture of greed and conflict with one of compassion and cooperation.” The book is enjoyable read reflecting his philosophy.
