Nov. 11 Flash Fiction: I dream

The 11th day of FlashNano22. The prompt: I dream all day long.

Angela had seen Les Mis at least four times: three with a professional group, once as an amateur production. She played the show on her CD-player, YouTube. Although Eponine was her favorite character, her favorite song was “I Dreamed a Dream.” She had her own dreams.

Angela wanted to be on Broadway and in musicals more than anything else. She had sung in the church children choir, and the director had given her singing lessons. She always won the leading role in any school production. There was a little theatre group in her town with a children’s section. Of the 11 productions in five years, she was in eight.

Now she was working as a file clerk in an insurance company. There had been no money for college.

Her best friend had shown her an article in The Boston Globe about Rubin Graves, the agent, who was in town looking for new talent. Hard to believe he had to look, she thought.

Angela got off the train at North Station and headed to the Parker House where Graves was staying. She should have been at work, but she’d called in sick.

The lobby was almost empty, although two women were sitting in chairs sipping tea. A new arrival handed his luggage to the bell hop. A few people came and went. One man was reading The New Yorker.

Angela found a chair and ordered tea. The waiter had just served her when she saw Graves leave the elevator bank.

Jumping up, she upset her tea, but she didn’t care as she rushed toward him. Opening her mouth, she sang, “I dreamed a dream…” as loudly as she could. Everyone stopped, including Graves.

The reporter, writing the story about Angela's discovery, hit send to his editor. So trite, he thought.
