Ronnie Gilbert (1926-2015)

I was a great folk music fan starting with the classics Woody Guthrie, Peter, Paul and Mary, Baez, Dylan,, Phil Ochs and of course Pete Seeger and the Weavers.

Ronnie Gilbert, along with Seeger, was one of those Weavers and we just lost her.

The Weavers became a group almost by accident. Had not a Manhattan owner booked them to play for two weeks they would have broken up.

They were broken but by politics and the McCarthy years when they were investigated by the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee. An FBI informant later admitted he lied, but chances to perform disappeared.

However in 1955 the group appeared in Carnegie Hall and performed together until 1964, although there was a concert again in .

Not one to be cowed and continued to speak out for justice.

Listen to her here.
